Most guides to a Gilford August will hand you a list of things to do. That is not the problem for anyone who already lives here. The problem is that three separate calendars stack on top of each other between August 7 and August 30, and the town moves very differently depending on which one you are paying attention to. If you treat these weekends as one long stretch of summer, you will spend an hour looking for parking at Ellacoya on the wrong afternoon. If you read them as overlapping schedules, you get your town back on the shoulder days.
Three calendars, one town
The three calendars are BankNH Pavilion, Gunstock Mountain Resort, and Gilford Old Home Day. Each has its own peak hours, its own traffic pattern on Route 11B, and its own effect on where you can and cannot get a table at 7 p.m.

Read that grid twice. The compression is not evenly spread. Aug 14 to 16 is the peak, and Aug 29 is the single busiest day of the month in town, with a parade, a fireworks show, a 5K, a concert three miles away, and Adventure Park still running full hours.
What actually changes on August 30
Gunstock's Adventure Park runs Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through August 30, 2026. After that, it drops to weekends only through November 1. That shift matters more than it sounds. The Thursday and Friday middays in mid-to-late August are the last easy windows all year to put a kid on the mountain coaster without a weekend crowd. The coaster carts run up to 25 mph and riders control their own braking, which is why parents keep coming back. The ZipTour runs 1.6 miles across the mountain, one of the longer continuous zip networks in the continental United States.
Two things worth knowing that are not on the marketing page. The Panorama chairlift went through an upgrade before scenic rides reopened for the 2026 season, so the summit ride is smoother than long-time locals may remember it. The Pavilion nights that reshape a Tuesday
BankNH Pavilion is a 9,000-seat amphitheater at 72 Meadowbrook Lane. On any show night the traffic pattern on Route 11B changes about ninety minutes before doors, and it stays changed until well after the encore. A Tuesday-night show like Billy Idol on August 18 turns a normally quiet weekday evening into a full concert night. Thursday, August 20 does the same with The Fray, Dashboard Confessional, and Colony House on the bill.
The single detail that separates locals from first-timers at the Pavilion is not about the music. It is about the parking lot. The venue permits tailgating, and yet possession or consumption of alcohol in the parking areas actually violates a local Gilford ordinance. The venue itself flags this on its guest information. Season regulars know. First-timers don't.
If a show is on and you want a burger without a wait, the answer is almost always to eat before 5:30 or after 9. Ellacoya Barn & Grille sits in a restored 1843 barn at 2667 Lake Shore Road, close enough to the venue that concert crowds find it, and Patrick's Pub & Eatery gets the overflow. Both have their regular rhythm the rest of the week. On Pavilion nights, they don't.
Sam Adams Brewhouse at the venue itself is worth an upgrade if you like your show with air conditioning and a private balcony view. The on-site campground behind the amphitheater is the other move: walk out, walk to a tent site, skip the post-show traffic entirely.
Old Home Day, read as a logistics problem
The 2026 Old Home Day is Saturday, August 29, with the theme "Gilford, No Place Like Home." The Parks and Recreation Department has published the schedule at gilfordrec.com: pancake breakfast, parade, craft and food booths, band concert, dance, and fireworks. The whole thing is genuinely worth showing up for, and that is not the point of this section.
The point is that August 29 is also the day of the 49th Annual Old Home Day 5K, which starts at 8 a.m. in front of the Gilford Village Store and is hosted by Gunstock Nordic Association. A few practical things a first-year resident will not know:
- Online pre-registration closes Friday, August 22 at 3 p.m. After that, race-day fees jump to $20 for 12 and under, $40 for all other age groups, and $140 for a family of four.
- Bibs can be picked up at Gilford Elementary School on Friday, August 22 from 6 to 7 p.m., or on race morning until 7:30 a.m.
- The first 100 registered runners get a race shirt.
Because the 5K runs through the village early, the parade and vendors follow, and Zach Top plays the Pavilion that same night, August 29 is the one day of the month where the sensible move is to plan the day tight and skip the beach entirely.
The shoulder hours nobody talks about
The whole reason to read August as a schedule is that the shoulder hours are excellent, and they get lost if you only track the marquee events.
Beans & Greens Farm at 245 Intervale Road is the clearest example. The barn is a restored 1878 timber-frame structure and has been a working farmstand since 1989, with new owners since April 2021. The Sweet Summer Artisan Market runs Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9, with vendors set up on the property. That is the first weekend of the month's compression. If you want cider donuts and a full farmstand experience without the Pavilion-adjacent bottleneck, that Sunday afternoon is your window before the Mumford weekend arrives.
Ellacoya State Park sits on the southwest shore of Winnipesaukee with a 600-foot sandy beach and views across to the Sandwich and Ossipee mountains. A few practical facts most people learn the hard way: pets are not permitted anywhere in the park, cell service is limited to nonexistent, and parking is capped. Reservations are strongly recommended on weekends, walk-ins go first come first served, and beach advisories from the NH Department of Environmental Services get updated daily during summer. The park stays open through October 24, 2026, so the real locals-only move is to shift Ellacoya visits into the September shoulder rather than fighting for a Saturday spot in August.
For the campground crowd, the RV area at Ellacoya is limited to a cumulative 14 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Extensions are not permitted. That is a state administrative rule most first-time renters don't discover until check-in.
If you plan one thing this month
Plan Thursday, August 20. It is the last easy weekday of full-hours Adventure Park before the venue shifts, The Fray plays a full-bill show at the Pavilion, and Ellacoya is emptier than it will be on any weekend day of the month. Old Home Day is still nine days out. Gunstock's coaster line moves. The barn at Beans & Greens is quiet on a Thursday. You get the town at its most usable, and by 7 p.m. you are on the lawn at the Pavilion instead of in a line at the beach gate.
Everything else in August in Gilford rewards the same logic. Read the three schedules together, and the month opens up.
